Vélez Sarsfield is closely identified with a white shirt crossed on the chest by a large Blue V. The design became part of the club’s official uniform in 1933 and developed into one of its clearest visual identifiers. Vélez had previously worn several different styles: its earliest players used plain white shirts, a navy-blue shirt followed in 1912, and red, white, and green vertical stripes were later adopted. The white-and-blue combination ultimately became the enduring first-team identity. Founded on January 1, 1910, the club is based in Buenos Aires and plays its home matches at Estadio José Amalfitani in the Liniers area. The same V motif also appears throughout Vélez’s wider visual identity, linking modern shirts with a design that has represented the club for generations.

The 1933 Shirt That Established the V

Vélez first wore the now-familiar white shirt with a Blue V in an official match on April 30, 1933. The club’s historical account explains that the shirts had originally been produced for a rugby team but were never collected, allowing Vélez to acquire the set when new uniforms were needed. The design was retained and eventually displaced the earlier tricolor shirt as the club’s principal look. More than nine decades later, the arrangement remains recognizable: the 2026 home shirt again uses a white base with a prominent blue chevron across the chest, preserving the defining geometry of the historic design.
