City: Avellaneda
Country: Argentina

Club Atlético Independiente is immediately associated with its Red home shirt, a color so closely tied to the club that “El Rojo” became one of its familiar nicknames. Officially founded in 1905 and based in Avellaneda, Independiente adopted red after beginning its football history in a different uniform. Across generations, the home shirt has remained predominantly red, often using White for collars, cuffs, lettering, or other details. Red and white also form the core of the club’s familiar shield, giving Independiente a consistent visual identity across its kit and institutional design. The colors accompanied the club through its major domestic and international achievements, including a record seven Copa Libertadores titles, making the red shirt particularly associated with Independiente’s continental history.

From White and Blue to Red in 1908

Independiente did not originally play in red. Its first official uniform in 1905 featured a white shirt with blue trim and a blue pocket carrying the IFC initials, together with blue shorts. The major visual change came on May 10, 1908, when Independiente debuted its red shirt in a match against Banfield. Red subsequently became the defining color of the first team and transformed the club’s appearance. The earlier white-and-blue identity was not completely abandoned, however: the historic IFC emblem and those original colors have periodically returned on alternative and commemorative shirts. That contrast between the founding uniform and the later red shirt is one of the clearest design changes in Independiente’s history.
